Donateo – Innovative Application for Microdonation on Payment Terminals

Since 2022, BetterPOS, in cooperation with Exorigo-Upos, has been implementing Donateo – an innovative fintech application in Polish stores that allows microdonations to charity to be made directly through payment terminals in the largest retail chains in Poland. The project is a new quality in the approach to charity collections, combining the innovation of payment technologies with the idea of supporting those in need.

Challenge

BetterPOS’s goal was to create a system that would allow for the easy, fast, and transparent transfer of microdonations during everyday shopping. This required integration with existing payment infrastructure to enable the application to run smoothly nationwide on thousands of payment terminals.

It is very important to us that contributors have full transparency and control over the support provided. Therefore, the logos of the foundation will appear on the screens that can be supported. After the donation, there will be a separate line item on the confirmation summarising the operation. Also, the contributor’s bank account will show the data of the supported organization, not Donateo, which does not participate in the operation itself but only provides a tool to perform it. We encourage you to pay the so-called ‘end’ of the bill, round the amount or a small percentage of the final sum. The idea is support based on liquidity, not the amount of payments.

Solution

Thanks to the cooperation with Exorigo-Upos, Donateo is an application integrated with payment terminals in retail chains. The application works on terminals and PIN Pads, using the proprietary Cloud EFT payment hub (Eurokarta EFT) from Exorigo-Upos, which is PCI P2PE certified and guarantees the highest transaction security standard.

Out of more than a thousand different projects we carry out annually, this one stands out for its combination of innovation with – especially for Exorigo-Upos, which is important – the idea of support for those in need. Cashless payments in the charity segment are the first such project in Poland. We are proud to be part of it. The Donateo application is a ready-made CSR solution for companies in the retail industry. It is very attractive in technology and easy to implement. First, it works on terminals and PIN Pads associated with our proprietary Cloud EFT payment hub (Eurocard EFT) and uses the already existing and widely available infrastructure of payment terminals. Cloud EFT is the first Polish solution to be PCI P2PE certified, which means it provides the highest global standard of card payment security. Today, it handles over 3 million transactions a day for our clients. In the project, we also use the fact that we have a lot of experience as an entity with the largest market share in the area of payment terminal service.

Customers paying by card, smartphone, BLIK or wearables can donate to a selected foundation before finalising the payment. The terminal screen displays the foundation’s logo, and after the donation is made, the relevant information appears on the receipt and in the customer’s bank transaction history.

Implementing Donateo was straightforward and did not require additional infrastructure expenditures from retailers. Two large retail chains—Auchan and Carrefour—have already implemented Donateo and are actively promoting the idea of microdonation among their customers. According to the chains, they collected a total of over PLN 6 million, which was transferred to the accounts of over 30 foundations and associations.

Summary

Implementing the Donateo application has increased the availability of microdonations in Poland. Thanks to this solution, customers at thousands of points of sale can support organisations such as the SOS Children’s Villages Association, PAH, or the Polish Federation of Food Banks daily. The transparency of operations ensures that donors have complete control over the donated funds, which go directly to the accounts of selected charities.
