The rubber duck method was first described in the book The Pragmatic Programmer in 1999. From that point on, it became an informal way for programmers to check code. It uses “thinking out loud,” considered one of the most effective ways to solve problems faster.
How can Duck help debug code?
According to the theory (and practice of some), developers trying to find bugs in the code, line by line, should explain to the rubber duck that stands next to them the anticipated functions of each segment of the code. The very fact of checking aloud will help reveal hidden errors. And if we use a gadget for this, we will not bother another developer unnecessarily.
The second method associated with this gadget is “Ask the duck”. What does it involve? The question that bothers the technical person is said out loud. Often, just hearing your doubts can quickly suggest the solution you are looking for.
Many developers laugh and think that no one uses ducklings. On the other hand, some experienced programmers argue that the method is effective—it is enough to try it once to ensure the duck’s availability near the laptop forever.
However, regardless of the sceptical attitude of some developers, the duck has made a huge career and has become one of the most popular gifts for IT specialists.
