Implementation of hybrid checkouts in the Carrefour retail chain

Carrefour is the largest omnichannel chain in Poland, operating in the market since 1997. Currently, over 800 stores operate across various formats. The company also owns and manages shopping centres and gas stations. Additionally, it conducts online sales both through its own website, carrefour.pl, and in cooperation with partners.

Introduction

In response to growing customer expectations and the need to optimise space in smaller retail locations, Exorigo-Upos implemented an innovative hybrid checkout project for the Carrefour store chain. This solution combines the functionality of a traditional checkout counter with a self-service mode, responding to dynamically changing customer traffic in stores.

Challenge

The main challenge was to ensure efficient customer service in locations with limited floor space (including franchise stores), where installing full-sized self-checkout islands was impossible. The client needed a tool that would allow staff to respond flexibly to queues while maintaining the highest standard of service.

Solution

Exorigo-Upos led the project’s end-to-end implementation. The process began with a demo version, enabling testing and the decision to proceed with a wide-scale rollout. The scope of work included:

  • Installation and advanced configuration of hybrid devices.
  • Customisation of checkout interfaces to allow seamless switching between operating modes.
  • Implementation of support for various cashless payment methods.
  • Implementation of procedures for transactions requiring cashier authorization.
  • Installation of accompanying infrastructure (communication speakers, mounting arms) and adaptation of devices to existing checkout stands.

Results

With the implementation of hybrid checkouts, Carrefour stores can now flexibly adapt their service approach to current traffic levels. The solution effectively reduced queue waiting times and improved overall shopping comfort. Ultimately, the system is scheduled for installation in over 100 existing locations as well as newly opened stores.

Completing this project also allowed the Exorigo-Upos team to gain practical experience deploying hybrid service models in space-constrained stores, creating a valuable knowledge base for future projects of this type.
