Mandatory flags on labels from February 17. Are your labels ready for new recipes?

From February 17, 2026, Polish markets and local stores will face another information revolution. In addition to the long list of requirements, such as the Omnibus Directive and the new accessibility rules, there is an obligation to clearly indicate the country of origin of fruit and vegetables. In a world of dynamic legal changes, a paper label becomes a barrier, not a support. How does modern ESL technology help retail chains get out of the regulatory thicket unscathed?

New obligation from 17 February

The regulations that come into force on 17 February 2026 impose a new, restrictive obligation on retailers. Fresh fruit, vegetables, and bananas sold in bulk (without packaging) must include not only information about the country of origin, but also legible graphics with the flag of a given country.

This change aims to increase transparency and make it easier for consumers to make informed choices. However, for stores operating on traditional paper price tags, this creates a significant logistical challenge. Each new batch of goods from a different supplier requires the label to be printed, cut, and manually replaced. For seasonal products, where the country of origin can change from day to day, the risk of error and incurring a severe financial penalty increases significantly.

More than price

In such conditions, electronic price labels become a natural solution. These are no longer just “price carriers”, but advanced interfaces that connect the store with current regulations.

A good example of the use of ESL labels is the obligation to indicate the country of origin of fruit and vegetables. Retail chains must not only update prices but also regularly supplement descriptive information, depending on the supplier, batch, or season. In practice, this means the need for rapid, mass data updates, which makes the advantage of ESL systems over traditional paper labels even more evident, says Michał Odzioba, Business Development Manager at Exorigo-Upos/Aquila Dynamics.

Technology and new regulations

The technical basis of ESL systems is display modules operating in two main technologies:

  • E-Ink: They are distinguished by their minimal power consumption (electricity is only consumed when updating content). They are ideal for displaying static information and graphics, such as legally required country flags.
  • LCDs: They allow you to display a full range of colors and animations, which opens up new paths of visual communication with the customer.

All labels are connected to centralized software in the cloud or on-premises. As a result, changing the country of origin or price across the entire “Vegetables and Fruits” section takes just one click.

Aligned with ESG trends

In 2026, consumers are more aware than ever. They are seeking information on the product’s origin, environmental impact, or the reasons for the price change. ESLs, especially when combined with QR codes, allow you to convey this data without cluttering shelves with unnecessary paper.

These systems also support ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) goals. Instead of throwing away food, retail chains use ESL to automatically lower the prices of products with a short shelf life. Dynamic pricing scenarios based on delivery date and inventory levels enable a real reduction in losses.

For the consumer, this means clear information, ‘why is it cheaper today? ‘, and for the store, a real reduction in losses. This is one of the areas where technology actually translates into sustainable trade,” adds Michał Odzioba.

Relieving staff and eliminating errors

In the era of staff shortages, automating sales-floor processes is becoming crucial. Electronic labels eliminate conflicts at the checkout resulting from erroneous prices on the shelves and relieve employees of the tedious obligation of manually updating thousands of notes. This allows staff to focus on what matters most – direct customer service.

Summary

Electronic price labels have entered a new phase of development. In 2026, their value is no longer determined by technology alone, but by their ability to ensure regulatory compliance, transparency, and build trust. With the new regulations of February 17, ESL is no longer a luxury but an indispensable tool for modern commerce.
